WILMINGTON, Del. – Building on their season-opening second-place performance two weeks ago, the University of Delaware cross country team reign supreme Friday morning at the GBC Fall Classic hosted by Goldey-Beacom College. Behind junior Katie Hally's personal-best 5K performance, the Blue Hens secured the top spot out of seven teams from Carousel Park in Wilmington.
The Blue & Gold swept the top-five scorers slot among the field of 65 NCAA Division I, II, III and NJCAA runners with a score of 15, while Stevenson University (61), Holy Family University (97), Chestnut Hill College (124), University of the District of Columbia, Washington D.C. (134), the hosts Lightning (140) and Neumann University (163) followed in respective order. "We wanted the (7-14) runners on our team to have an opportunity to get out front and race for a team win," said head coach Ryan Waite. "It was really special for Katie, first-ever individual win of her career, and she led the team to a 1-5 sweep. It is always a fun thing to see 15 in the score."
Hally led the way finishing the 5K-course in a personal-best time of 19:54.6 to earn the individual title. Samantha Side followed in second place at a time of 20:21.7 while Carolyn Coletti crossed the finish line in third with a time of 20:22.7. Danielle Eshelman (20:32.7) and Anna Cleary (20:34.7) rounded out Delaware's top-five scorers with fourth and fifth place finishes.
"This race was really fun. It's always good to get out here with the team and just really work together to all have good races," Hally stated. "This is my first cross country win ever, so that was really fun to come out here. I actually live five minutes from here and I never raced this course, but I run here a lot so it was really cool and really special to get the win here."
Delaware also saw Sarah Kimak finish in 21:10.0 for ninth place and Alicia Lenoir timed 21:27.7 to claim 11th place.
Waite added, "I am really excited for where the group is at. If this is where our 7-10 runners, I am excited to see what that means where our 1-6 are right now as they start to open up the season next week in Boston."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Blue Hens returns to action next Friday, Sept. 24, at the Battle of Beantown hosted by Boston College from Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. at 3 p.m.
