Blue Hens Drop Home Opener to Monmouth, 4-0

NEWARK, Del. – Griffin Thomas and Julian Gomez each scored two goals as Monmouth spoiled Delaware's home opener with a 4-0 win over the Blue Hens Tuesday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Monmouth took the lead in the 38th minute when Jonas Lindner fed Tomas who dribbled down the center of the field and scored from 16 yards out. Less than three minutes later Gomez blasted a shot into the bottom left corner of the cage from 15 yards out to make it a two-goal game.
Gomez scored his second goal of the night in the 72nd minute off assists from Jonas Lyshoj and Ben Zakowski. In the final minute Tomas collected a loose ball and fired a shot in the bottom right corner of the net to close the scoring.
Delaware held a 15-12 advantage in shots, including four by Orri Thorhallsson, but could not find the back of the cage. The Blue Hens also held a slim 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Gonzalo Bartoli made four saves in the UD net, while Sean Murray also stopped four shots in recording the clean sheet.
"We knew that our non-conference RPI was very strong. Monmouth is an NCAA team, and obviously we've faced Big Ten and Big East teams. It's been good competition, all to serve the purpose of getting ready for conference play. So we have a huge weekend upcoming. I feel bad for the group, because I think there's more goals than we showed tonight," said UD head coach Ian Hennessy.
Delaware opens its CAA schedule this weekend with a 7 p.m. match at Elon.
