Women’s Basketball Fall To Drexel in CAA Road Battle

PHILADELPHIA – The most anticipated women's basketball CAA matchup took place Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia between the University of Delaware and the defending conference champions Drexel inside Daskalakis Athletic Center. Delaware (10-5, 4-1 CAA) came up short in the final quarter and suffered a 70-62 loss to Drexel (14-2, 6-0 CAA), stopping their winning streak at four games. The Dragons are now the only team remaining that is undefeated in league play, extending their winning streak to 11 games.
Delaware and Drexel fought for the advantage in the opening 7:04. With 14-all showing on the first-quarter clock, Jasmine Dickey sank a pair of freebies to give the Blue Hens the narrow two-point lead, 16-14, with 2:28 left. The Dragons then used an 8-0 run to close out the quarter, holding the 22-16 advantage.
Drexel saw their lead balloon to a game-high 11 points after Hannah Nihill's jumper at the 5:52 mark of the second quarter. Lizzie Oleary's layup 25 seconds later kick started a much-needed 8-0 spurt for Delaware to trim the deficit to three points, 31-28, with 2:30 remaining. The Dragons built their lead back up to six points before Dickey knocked down her routine stepback jumper with five seconds left, sending the Blue Hens into the break trailing by four, 38-34.
The seesaw battle commenced in the third period where Delaware and the Drexel didn't hold a lead larger than three points. Battle, who was responsible for scoring nine of the Blue Hens third quarter 18 points, drained a free throw with one second left to send the 52-all game into the final quarter.
43 seconds into the fourth, Keishana Washington connected from deep to ignite a 9-2 run for Drexel to lead by seven, 61-54. The Blue Hens got in as close as four points (61-57) after Tyi Skinner's triple with 5:05 left. With momentum on their side, the Dragons used a final 9-3 spurt to rebuild their double-digit lead, 70-60. Dickey laid in two to with three seconds left to settle the 70-62 final.
Dickey finished the afternoon with 19 points and eight rebounds to pace Delaware. Skinner followed with 17 points (4-of-7 3FG) and three assists while Battle added 13 points and 13 rebounds (seven offensive) to post her 10th double-double of the season. Oleary pulled down 11 rebounds.
Nihill led the way with 22 points (9-of-16 FG), nine assists and five rebounds in Drexel's win. Washington followed with 21 points (9-of-18 FG), three rebound and three assists while Tessa Brugler poured in 16 points (7-of-15 FG) and grabbed seven rebounds.
Delaware shot 37.7 percent (26-of-69) from the field, 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the free-throw line. Drexel connected on 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from three-point territory and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the charity stripe. Delaware held the rebound margin advantage (39-32) while scoring 21 second-chance points off of 16 offensive rebounds. Drexel held the edge in assists (19-5), blocks (2-1), steals (5-3), fast break points (20-6) and bench points (6-2) while scoring 16 points off of 14 Blue Hen miscues. Delaware led in points in the paint (32-30) category.
