Volleyball Sweeps Charleston To Extend Winning Streak To Nine

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Delaware volleyball team brought out the brooms Monday afternoon and completed the clean sweep (25-15, 25-23, 25-22) of Charleston (7-10, 2-2 CAA) inside TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. With the win, the Blue Hens (10-4, 6-0 CAA) remain undefeated in conference play and extend their winning streak to nine games.
"We were able to carry over and maintain the momentum from yesterday's match," said head coach Kimberly Lambert. "Our defense really stepped up and Lily did a great job of running our offense today. I am really proud of the total team effort today."
Delaware came through blazing, putting together their finest set in the opener with a .357 clip, before closing out the afternoon swinging at .279 compared to Charleston's .093. The Blue Hens led the way in points (57-47), kills (42-35), blocks (10-6), assists (36-29) and digs (59-48). The Cougars held the edge in aces (6-5).
After Charleston took the 5-2 lead in the first set, the Blue Hens scored five-straight points with Lani Mason serving four, 7-5. The set remained close with the Cougars holding the narrow one-point advantage (12-11). Delaware responded with a dominating 14-3 run that was sparked by Lily Rogers connecting with Mason. The set was highlighted the Blue Hens closing out using an 8-1 spurt, with Mason serving seven-straight, in the 25-15 set one win.
The Blue Hens remained in control opening with an 11-6 lead capped by a Lauryn Richardson kill. Delaware saw its lead balloon to nine points thanks to a 7-2 run, ending with back-to-back Mason kills. The Cougars clawed their way back by scoring seven-unanswered points to tie the set, 22-22. Savannah Seemans saw the opportunity to put set two in Delaware's win column and finished feeds from Eileen Gex and Rogers, respectively, before her nailing down her lone ace of the afternoon to secure the 25-23 set two victory.
Charleston took an early 4-2 lead in the third set before Delaware pulled things together. Rogers' buried a kill as part of the Blue Hens' 8-1 scoring spurt, 10-5. The Cougars were determined to stay in the match and got in as close as one, courtesy of Anna Smith's kill, 19-18. A Charleston attacking error gave Delaware match point, 24-19, but the Cougars went on a 3-0 run to pull within two (24-22). The match was put away when Mason slammed her 16th kill of the afternoon to claim the straight-sets victory (25-22).
Mason led the way with 16 kills to go along with nine digs, two aces and one block. Seemans followed with 13 digs, nine kills and three blocks. Rogers was in charge of the Blue Hen offense and dished out 30 assists to go with 11 digs to post her first double-double season while Gex scooped up 16 digs to anchor the Blue Hen defense. Standing tall was Richardson and Pearce Auiger, who both had five blocks apiece.
Gabi Bailey paced Charleston with nine kills and 10 digs while Emma Appleman dished out 21 assists. Chandler Manusky chipped in 12 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Blue Hens will return to the First State and open their four-game homestand this weekend. They will host the defending CAA champions Towson in a weekend series Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9 which are both slated for a 2 p.m. start inside Bob Carpenter Center.
