Volleyball Tangles With Towson

NEWARK, Del. – The most anticipated CAA volleyball matchup took place Saturday afternoon in Newark, Del. between the University of Delaware and the three-time defending conference champions Towson (17-0, 7-0 CAA) inside Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware (10-5, 6-1 CAA) fell in three sets (24-26, 16-25, 18-25), stopping their winning streak at nine matches. The Tigers are now one of two teams remaining that is undefeated in league play (Hofstra), extending their winning streak to 17 matches.
Delaware held Towson to a second season-low hitting percentage of .183 while leading the way in aces (4-3). Towson finished with the edge in points (52-32), kills (40-26), blocks (9-2), assists (37-26) and digs (45-43).
After Towson opened with a 7-2 run, Delaware responded quickly by scoring five-straight capped by back-to-back aces by Lani Mason. As the Tigers attempted to pull away the Blue Hens remained right on their heels to keep the set close. The Tigers had set point favoring them before a Mason kill followed by an attacking error by Towson's Victory Barrett made it a 24-all match. The Tigers scored two-straight to take the 26-24 set one win.
Towson took the 2-0 set lead after capturing the 25-16 set two win. Delaware was in familiar territory being down two sets was determined to keep the match alive. The Blue Hens used a 4-0 run, with Amelia Painter serving three-straight points, to pull within three points (14-11). Delaware stayed in it, trailing by only three points (18-15), before Towson went on a 7-3 run to secure the straight-sets win.
Mason paced Delaware with 10 kills and 10 digs to post her sixth double-double of the season while Lily Rogers dished out 21 assists and scooped up 10 digs to post her second double-double of the season. Eileen Gex chipped in 11 digs.
Fay Bakodimou and Nina Cajic each finished with eight kills apiece for Towson. Victory Barrett followed with 13 digs and seven kills while Sarah Jordan and Katie McCarken had 16 and 14 assists, respectively.
