PHILADELPHIA. – Delaware field hockey (7-11) closes regular season action with a 3-1 loss against Penn (5-10) on Sunday.
"Congrats to Penn and the grit they played with today. We struggled as a team to perform as we displayed in CAA action last weekend," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said.
"Looking back on our regular season; there was a lot of learning and experiencing as well as working through adversity and injuries as a team and program. We all have grown and when our knowledge is applied it could do well in post season. We are excited to gear up for the CAA Conference Tournament at Rullo Stadium next weekend."
After a scoreless first half, Penn got off to a hot start scoring two goals in the 35th and 37th minute of the third quarter.
The Blue Hens didn't go down without a fight as Berber Bakermans scored her third goal of the season with 23 seconds left in the quarter. She was assisted by Kiki Oudshoorn, her sixth of the season. Oudshoorn found Bakermans in the attacking circle and scored to the lower right of the net.
The Quakers stopped the Blue Hens' comeback with a goal of their own in the 52nd and 55th minutes.
The Quakers out-shot the Blue Hens 16-10 and had an 11-3 shots-on-goal advantage.
Lizzie Gaebel and Eve Vickery split time in net. Gaebel played in the first half and had two saves. Vickery had five saves, allowed four goals, and was credited with the decision.
The Blue Hens look ahead to the Colonial Athletic Association's Tournament against three-seed Northeastern on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. The Blue Hens are the two-seed.
