Women’s Soccer Falls to Stony Brook, 1-0

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware women's soccer played their third straight conference match at home tonight at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium, as they fell to Stony Brook, 1-0.
"We're playing great soccer right now but at the end of the day, goals change games," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We had more than our fair share of opportunities in the first 10-15 minutes of the game where we could've put away a conference opponent and completely changed the game. We need to be better in that facet and find ways to put the ball in the back of the net. We played really well with another great performance at home, but it wasn't enough. We have things we need to work on before our next match on Sunday."
Both teams battled in the first half as they combined for 17 shots with 10 on target. The Blue Hens possessed the ball for 61 percent of the half, as they garnered five corner kicks in the first period.
The Seawolves broke the tie when they got the edge off a corner kick as the ball bounced back and forth like a pinball machine with Stony Brook's Hannah Maracina kicking it off a Delaware player and into the back of the net in the 74th minute.
The Blue Hens fought down to the final second but were unable to come away with the victory.
Delaware's Odaliana Gomez made four saves in the first half to finish with five total for the game.
Delaware falls to 2-8-4, 1-3-1 in conference play. Stony Brook improves to 5-7-2, 2-2-1 in conference play. The Blue Hens held the edge in shots (12-10) and corner kicks (8-5).
The Blue Hens welcome Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Youth Day. The first 100 fans will receive a coupon for a free UDairy single scoop.
