NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team fell in three sets (18-25, 15-25, 15-25) to the three-time CAA defending champions Towson (18-0, 8-0 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware (10-6, 6-2 CAA) has now dropped their second-straight match as the Tigers complete the season series sweep.
Delaware's best attacking percentage came at the second set (.250) before finishing the afternoon hitting .049 compared to Towson's .400. The Tigers led the way in points (57-29), kills (45-25), aces (5-0), blocks (7-4), assists (44-24) and digs (29-27).
The opening set proved to be a seesaw battle between the Blue Hens and the Tigers, which saw four lead changes and eight ties, 11-11. Delaware responded to Towson's 3-0 run with a kill by Lani Mason followed by Pearce Augier and Savannah Seemans sending away Irbe Lazda's attempt, pulling the Blue Hens within one, 14-13. The Tigers closed out with an 11-5 spurt to capture the 25-18 set one win.
In set two, Towson took the early 2-0 lead. Fay Bakodimou's service error ignited a much needed 5-1 run, capped by back-to-back Mason kills, for the Blue Hens to take the 5-3 lead. The fight for the advantage commenced as Seemans' buried Lily Rogers' feed to knot the set up at seven. Then Towson ran away with it using a 18-8 run to claim the 25-18 set two win.
Back in familiar territory being down two sets, Delaware kept up with the Tigers only to trail by two, thanks to Mason and Augier rising up to send Bakodimou's attack away, 10-8. The Blue Hens answered back to Towson's 8-1 run by scoring four-straight points, three coming from Mason serving, to trim the deficit to four, 18-13. Towson remained in the driver's seat and closed out the match with a 7-2 run to secure the straight-set (25-15) victory, en route to their 18th win of the season.
Mason pace Delaware with 13 kills, four digs and two blocks while Rogers dished out 22 assists. Augier chipped in three blocks.
Victoria Barrett finished with 13 kills while Bakodimou added 10 kills and four digs for Towson. Katie McCraken and Sarah Jordan had 19 and 18 assists, respectively.
