Women’s Basketball Battles Columbia In Home Opener
11/10/2022 9:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team made their return to Newark Thursday evening to open their home slate of the 2022-23 young season. The Blue Hens (1-1) went on a late fourth quarter surge but came up short, suffering a 64-56 setback to the Lions (2-0) inside Bob Carpenter Center.
After Columbia opened the game holding the 8-4 lead, Tara Cousins drained a jumper for Delaware to kick start an 11-4 spurt to take the 15-12 advantage. The Lions then responded by scoring five-answered points before Jewel Smalls connected from deep with 10 seconds left for the Blue Hens to close out the quarter up by one, 18-17.
The seesaw battle commenced in the second quarter where the fans of 956 saw two ties and six lead changes, which was capped by Columbia's Kitt Henderson's layup to send the 30-all game into the break.
Delaware kept it close in the third as Mia Yanogacio's driving layup tied the game at 39 with 3:39 remaining. Columbia then went on an 8-0 run to build the eight-point cushion heading into the final quarter of play, 47-39.
With their backs against the wall, the Blue Hens attempted to claw their way back into this game, as they held Columbia in a scoring drought that lasted over six minutes in the fourth quarter. Delaware went on an 8-0 run to pull within four (53-49) with 2:48 remaining. The Blue Hens held the Lions to 0-7 shooting and forced four turnovers during that stretch. Columbia was able to hang on, however, and ended the game 11-5 run to secure their second win on the young season.
Cousins paced Delaware with 12 points, six rebounds and four steals while Jewel Smalls followed with 11 points and five rebounds while knocking down three three-pointers. Makayla Pippin pulled down nine rebounds and Klarke Sconiers sent away two shots.
Hannah Pratt finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds in Columbia's win. Henderson chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds.
In the end, Delaware finished the evening shooting 36.5 percent from the field, 23.8 percent from beyond the arc and made five of nine attempts from the free-throw line. Columbia connected on 31.0 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three-point territory and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. The Lions outrebounded Delaware 53-40 while scoring 14 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds. Delaware forced 16 turnovers as compared to 13 of their own, while having more points in the paint (24-20) and bench points (16-7).
