Cross Country Year-In-Review
11/28/2022 2:00:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
NEWARK, Del.– Delaware women's cross country competed in its 41st season in 2022. It was a year marked with solid finishes and individuals shining.
This was also the first year with head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele at the helm, taking over as head coach on Sept. 14.
The Schedule
Delaware opened its season with two meets in-state and performed well at both, earning the team title at the Delaware Opener on Sept. 3, which they hosted, and the GBC Fall Classic, where they recorded a perfect score of 15 to claim the team title once again.
The Blue Hens had to travel for three-straight meets, taking part in the Roy Griak Invitational (Minnesota, Sept. 23), Paul Short Run (Lehigh, Sept. 30) and the PSU National Open (Penn State, Oct. 14) before returning home for two meets.
UD hosted its final regular-season meet on Oct. 15, earning a second-place finish at the Delaware Invitational. They had the opportunity to host the CAA Championship this year, and at White Clay Creek State Park, Delaware placed fifth among 12 CAA schools.
The Blue Hens sent their top seven runners to Penn State for NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Nov. 11, where they placed 16th of 26 teams.
Individual Success
The Blue Hens had several different individuals finish first among the roster at races this season.
Sarah Daniels started the cross country season off on the right foot, crossing the finish line in first place at the Delaware Opener while facing off against CAA schools Towson and Monmouth.
In a race where Delaware runners earned the top seven finishes, it was freshman Grace Chesley who crossed the finish line first at the GBC Fall Classic, one of two first-place finishes for the Hens this year.
Freshman Nina Sgambelluri placed a respectable 52nd at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota, the best time for any Blue Hen runner. Sgambelluri had a strong freshman campaign, earning second place in the Delaware Opener and 19th at the CAA Championship.
Autumn Sands was Delaware's top finisher in two races this season. At the PSU National Open, Sands placed 47th. She doubled down on the same course later at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, placing 62nd.
CAA Honors
Following their performances at the CAA Championship, Sarah Daniels and Autumn Sands were both named to the 2022 All-CAA Team after finishing in the top 15 of the conference race.
