Blue Hens Shutout Lehigh in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Delaware field hockey (10-11) shutout Lehigh (13-8) 4-0 in the Opening Round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, November 9 at Karen Shelton Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
Wednesday was the first time the Blue Hens had a shutout in the NCAA Tournament since November 12, 2016 when the Blue Hens defeated Louisville 1-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
"A good result to opening up the NCAA tournament," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "We played more than two good quarters versus Lehigh, which allows us room for growth in our game next time. I am proud of our team for working through some of the in-game challenges and making the adjustments to improve our performance versus the Patriot League champions today."
The Blue Hens advance to the First Round of the NCAA Tournament and take on top-seed UNC on Friday, November 11 at noon.
The Blue Hens got on the board with two first-quarter goals. Julia Duffhuis got the Blue Hens on the board with a goal off a penalty corner, she was assisted by Berber Bakermans and Ashlyn Carr. Bakermans received an inserted pass from Carr, and passed it off to Duffhis, who found the back of the net. It was Duffhuis' team-leading 13th goal of the season. Duffhuis has scored a goal in five of the last six games.
Less than two minutes after Duffhuis' goal, Sian Emslie scored her third goal of the season, with an assist coming from Kiki Oudshoorn. It was Emslie's third goal of the season and Oudshoorn's ninth assist.
Delaware added two goals in the third quarter. The first one came off the stick of Lia Becker and was assisted by Bakermans. It was Becker's fourth goal of the season. Genevieve Johnson scored her third goal of the season, with the assist coming from Oudshoorn.
On the day, the Blue Hens outshot Lehigh 16-10 and had a 10-6 shots-on-goal advantage.
Bakermans has 16 assists on the season and has 11 assists over her last five games. Carr has 13 assists on the season, recorded five assists over her last three games, and has registered an assist in six of her last seven games. Oudshoorn has nine assists on the season and has recorded four assists in her last four games.
Lizzie Gaebel picked up her 10th and registered her second shutout of the season. It was the eighth shutout of her career. Gaebel picked up five saves on the day.
