Shooting Woes Halt Men’s Basketball Against Red-Hot Hofstra
12/29/2022 9:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – A red-hot shooting Hofstra (8-6, 1-0 CAA) team proved to be too much for Delaware (8-6, 0-1 CAA) Thursday night with the Pride winning the league opener 87-73. The Blue Hens shot 42.3 percent from the field compared to Hofstra's 59.3 percent.
Both teams were led by a pair of 20-point scorers in Jameer Nelson Jr. (22) and Jyáre Davis (21) for UD & Aaron Estrada (31) and Tyler Thomas (20) for the Pride.
The visitors jumped out to a 9-0 lead before a Delaware timeout at 17:09. A Nelson Jr. four-point play brought the Hens as close as three points in the early portion. The Blue Hens ended the half cold, shooting 1-for-7 from the field and going scoreless over the final 3:06 of the first frame. Hofstra held a 44-29 advantage going into the break.
UD cut the deficit to eight points after an 8-2 run over a 1:11 span for a 56-48 Pride lead, but that would be the closest the Blue Hens would come.
As part of its 59.3 percent field-goal percentage, Hofstra connected on an even 50-percent from long range, going 7-of-14. Delaware didn't shoot as well from deep, going 7-of-23 or 30.4 percent.
Nelson Jr. and Davis were joined by LJ Owens in double figures with 14 points. Christian Ray returned to his early season form with 14 rebounds to lead all players.
Delaware stays put at the BCC for a New Year's Eve showdown with Elon on Saturday at 2 p.m.
