Men’s Basketball Renews Route 1 Rivalry Against Delaware State

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware men's basketball (4-4) has a date with a familiar foe on Wednesday as it plays the latest iteration of the Route 1 Rivalry, hosting Delaware State (1-7) at 7 p.m. in the Bob Carpenter Center.

SCOUTING DELAWARE:
- Delaware split its two games last week, falling to Cornell on Thursday and emerging with an impressive win over Davidson on Saturday.
- Through eight games, the Blue Hens have three players averaging double digits in points.
- Jyáre Davis had a career game against Davidson, scoring 25 points, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing five assists, and racking up three blocks and three steals all while not turning the ball over once. He is the first player nationally to do so since at least 2009. This performance was part of what led to the Newark, Del. native to being named CAA Co-Player of the Week. Davis is averaging 16.9 points per game this season.
- Jameer Nelson Jr. continues his solid start to the season after averaging 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds during the two-game set last week. He leads the Blue Hens in scoring at 17.8 points per game this season.
- LJ Owens has scored 10 points or more in five consecutive games. He is currently scoring an average of 10.4 points per game.
- Christian Ray continued his huge presence on the glass this season. He has grabbed 10 or more boards in six of eight contests this year, putting him at 11.5 rebounds per game, which is good for sixth in the nation.
- Delaware State is on a six-game losing streak coming into its matchup against the Blue Hens, dropping both games last week against Saint Francis Brooklyn and Longwood.
- Head coach Stan Waterman is the former coach at Sanford School, where he coached Jyáre Davis. Waterman also played at Delaware from 1984-88.
- Khyrie Staten leads the way in scoring for the Hornets, averaging 13.7 through eight games.
- Robert Morris transfer Brandon Stone is second in scoring (11.6) and first in rebounding (5.4). Stone and Christian Ray played together at La Salle from 2019-20 before Stone joined RMU.
- This is the first of two CAA opponents for Delaware State. They will play Drexel on Dec. 17 in Philadelphia.
- Delaware has faced the Hornets 21 times in program history and five times during the Ingelsby era. They are 16-5 against Delaware State all-time.
- These two teams met last season in Dover. Delaware beat the Hornets 59-48 on 12/2/2021. Jameer Nelson Jr. led the way with 16 points in the win.
