NEWARK, Del. – No. 16 Delaware men's lacrosse showed up and showed out against visiting Mount St. Mary's this afternoon at Delaware Stadium. Even a few last-minute goals by the Mountaineers couldn't stop the Blue Hens, who dominated their foe to earn the 12-6 victory.
"We had a terrific crowd of Blue Hen faithful that brought great energy to our team this afternoon," said head coach Ben DeLuca. "I thought we demonstrated great effort from start to finish to earn a hard-fought team win in Delaware Stadium. We were also very proud to bring awareness to the One Love Foundation through our double header with our women's lacrosse program."
The Blue Hens (2-0) competed in their second straight home game to open the season, as they posted their second-straight double-digit goals performance.
It took some time for Delaware to score its first goal of the game, but when the Blue Hens did, the goals came flying. JP Ward kicked off the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute of the first quarter, followed by a Clay Miller goal one minute later when Nick Jessen found him in the right spot at the right time.
The Blue Hens carried a 2-0 edge into the second quarter where they scored three goals in a three and a half minute span. Miller passed to Cam Acchione, who perfected a behind-the-back shot attempt that landed in the net for the score as everyone in the stadium jumped to their feet to cheer. Ward assisted on the next two goals when Jason Seiter and Drew Lenkaitis aided in the Blue Hens' 5-0 stretch.
Mount St. Mary's managed to stop the Blue Hens scoring spree with a goal of its own at the 5:55 mark in the second quarter.
Delaware entered the break with a 6-1 edge as Mike Robinson scored with five minutes remaining in the half. By the break, UD had attempted 28 shots to Mount St. Mary's 15.
The third quarter provided a mixture of head-turning scores for the Blue Hens. While Miller scored his second goal of the day to kick it off, it was defenders Josh Bayer and Owen Grant that added some offense with their defensive presence to score a pair of goals.
Despite Mount St. Mary's scoring four goals in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers were no match for the Blue Hens this afternoon.
Acchione, Bayer, Grant, and Seiter all scored their first goals of the season. Robinson improved his team-leading goals scored count to seven. Miller finished with a trio of goals and one assist for four points, followed by two goals and two assists from Ward for four points.
Logan Premtaj collected seven of Delaware's 43 ground balls, while four other players finished with five ground balls each. Premtaj finished with a face-off percentage of .500 (11-for-22).
Matt Kilkeary registered a season-best 16 saves, one short of his career-high of 17, also against Mount St. Mary's last season. The goalkeeper improved to 2-0 in the net this season.
Mount St. Mary's drops to 1-1 this season. The Mountaineers had six different players score. Ben Ward had a team-high four ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Griffin McGinley made 10 saves in his first loss of the season.
The Blue Hens will begin a two-game road stand with a match-up at Saint Joseph's on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
