PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – It went down to the final seconds in Philadelphia, but Delaware men's lacrosse triumphed this afternoon to win its first road test of the season with a 12-11 victory at St. Joe's at Sweeney Field.

"Today served as a much-needed learning experience & character-building opportunity for our team," said head coach Ben DeLuca. "Overall, we did a good job of handling adversity to earn a hard-fought win on the road. It was great to see several players step up and make big plays throughout the game to secure the victory."

St. Joe's managed to be the first team this season to score first on Delaware. The Hawks registered a goal at the 13:51 mark in the first quarter when Matt Bohmer found the net. Delaware's Jason Seiter tied it at 1-1 before the Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 advantage with three goals in four minutes.

Delaware had enough of St. Joe's sticks and decided to take their offensive pressure up a notch.

The Blue Hens scored six straight goals – Clay Miller, Mike Robinson, Cam Acchione, Miller (two in a row), and Nick Jessen - bringing the heat to a rather cold day. The scoring spree forced St. Joe's to call a timeout and regroup.

Coming out of the break, St. Joe's Carter Page managed to sneak a goal past Kilkeary to trim Delaware's lead to 7-5. After Acchione's second goal of the day, Delaware expanded its lead to three goals and the Blue Hens entered halftime up 8-5.

Once again the Hawks scored first in the half, but an acrobatic spin move by Miller was a sight to see with 11:32 to go in the third quarter.

St. Joe's rattled off four consecutive goals to go on a scoring spree and take a 10-9 advantage.

Acchione's goal with 1:28 left in the third quarter tied the game at 10-10. Never looking back, Delaware tacked on a pair of goals from Jessen and Mark Bieda. St. Joe's squeezed out one goal with 2:28 remaining in the game, but that would be their last as Owen Grant caused a turnover with three seconds remaining on the clock to seal the win for the away team.

Miller record his third consecutive hat trick this season to finish with a career-high five goals scored. Acchione finished with three points (two goals and one assist), while Jessen added a pair of goals scored.

Grant led the way with three of Delaware's eight caused turnovers, while Jason Seiter and Logan Premtaj collected three ground balls each.

Matt Kilkeary started the game and made six saves. Freshman Paul Reidy made his collegiate debut late in the third quarter. Reidy collected fives and earned the win in the net.

St. Joe's (1-1) was led in scoring by Matt Bohmer and Tucker Brown. Both players scored three goals apiece. Zach Cole had a team-high 12 ground balls. Tucker Almany had 14 saves for the Hawks.

The Blue Hens play one week from today at No. 7/8 Duke. The game is slated for 3 p.m. in Durham, NC.
