Women’s Basketball Rolls Past UNCW For Fifth-Straight Win
2/6/2022 4:52:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team closed out their brief homestand Sunday afternoon with a 77-62 CAA win over UNCW (3-16, 0-9 CAA), sweeping the season series inside Bob Carpenter Center. Capturing the win in front of the home crowd of 1,294, the Blue Hens (15-5, 9-1 CAA) extended their winning streak to five games while pushing their winning streak against the Seahawks to seven games.
"Everyone wants to win the basketball game, I felt like we got caught up in their pace [UNCW] and I challenged the team to lock back into principles" said head coach Natasha Adair. "You know that the opposing team is going to give that final push, but at the end of the day, we had to control and regain the tempo and the momentum. We wanted to come out of this winning the rebound margin, limiting their second-chance opportunities and contain them on defense, making it harder for them to score. We just wanted to slow the game down and control the pace and play our game."
Delaware opened the game with a 10-2 run, highlighted by a pair of triples by Ty Battle and Paris McBride. UNCW trailed by five (10-5) after an Allie Best three-pointer at the 4:58 mark. The Blue Hens responded by outscoring the Seahawks 11-5 in the remaining 4:43 of the first quarter, 23-10.
The Seahawks got in as close as seven, 27-20, thanks to Dejah Carter's layup with 6:02 showing on the second-quarter clock. Jasmine Dickey sank a free throw at 5:35 to ignite Delaware's 14-7 spurt, which was capped by Tyi Skinner connecting from deep, to send the 42-27 game into the break.
As part of the 10-2 run in the third, the Blue Hens saw their lead balloon to a game-high 23 points after Dickey poured in two free throws at the 6:22 mark. With 8:43 showing on the fourth-quarter clock, Dickey grabbed one of her six offensive rebound and laid it back in to rewrite the UD's history books. The Baltimore, Md. native surpassed her previous teammate Nicole Enabosi's 1,676 career-points mark to sit comfortably in second place in program history.
Battling to get within single-digits, UNCW changed the tide of the game by making it an eight-point game courtesy of Sierra DaCosta's three ball, 60-52, with 8:28 left. Delaware remained composed as McBride laid in two points for the Blue Hens to push and maintain the double-digit lead over the final 7:29. Skinner scored Delaware's last four points to settle the 77-62 final.
DeCosta led all scorers with 26 points (12-of-16 FT) and pulled down 12 rebounds to pace UNCW while Carter chipped in 14 points.
Delaware shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field, 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc and 79.4 percent (27-of-34) from the free-throw line. UNCW connected on 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from three-point territory and 75 percent (15-of-20) from the charity stripe. Delaware held the rebound margin advantage (44-39) while scoring 21 second-chance points off of 21 offensive rebounds. The Blue Hens led the way in assists (12-11), points in the paint (32-30) and fast break points (12-3) while scoring 16 points off of 19 Seahawk turnovers. UNCW held the edge in steals (5-4) and bench points (8-2) while both teams drew even with four blocks apiece.
