Women’s Basketball Outlasts Towson, 81-78

TOWSON, Md. – Tonight's game was intense down to the final buzzer, but it was Delaware that prevailed as the winner with an 81-78 victory over Towson at SECU Arena.
"It was Jasmine (Dickey), but it was the team," said head coach Natasha Adair. "She responded really well. The players made big shots early. Tyi Skinner. Ty Battle. We practice these scenarios. Jasmine wanted to guard (Aleah) Nelson, who is a premier player. It came down to plays. We defend. We rebound. We run. We score. Paris (McBride) knocking down free throws. We went to the free throw line 24 times to Towson's 11. That's the stat of the night. These are two top teams not only in the CAA but also in the country."
Backed by 29 points and 12 rebounds from Jasmine Dickey, her 10th double-double of the season, Delaware improved to 16-5, 10-1 CAA, while the loss dropped Towson to 17-5, 8-3 CAA. With the win, the Blue Hens extended their winning streak to a season-best six games while handing the Tigers their first loss on their home court and snapping the five-game winning streak.
It was a fast-paced game right from the start and a battle for the paint. Delaware began the game on a 5-0 run guided by a basket and a trio of free throws. Towson came clawing back and took a four-point win into the second quarter.
The Tigers carried that rhythm into the second quarter which led to an eight-point lead at the 5:23 mark, but the Blue Hens did not give up.
The Blue Hens moved the ball well in the first half, which enabled them to have multiple offensive options. Delaware's ball movement earned them nine attempts at the charity stripe in the first half resulting in seven points.
The Blue Hens ended the first half on an 11-5 run to trim Towson's lead to two points and enter the locker room down, 36-34.
A three-point play by Dickey gave the Blue Hens their first lead of the second half at 41-40 with 8:03 remaining in the third quarter. Always within arm's reach, both teams provided next-level excitement for all fans in attendance.
Fast forward to the fourth quarter and the Blue Hens turned up their intensity to another gear. With fans watching in the arena and online, there were a lot of people suffering from high blood pressure in the final minutes.
When it came down to it, Tyi Skinner hit a clutch three-pointer and Paris McBride connected on a pair of free throws in the final seconds to give Delaware the victory.
The stat sheet backed up what the fans saw in person, which was a heavy inside presence by both teams that saw 36 points in the paint for Delaware and 32 for Towson.
Tonight was the 15th double-digit rebounding game this season and the fourth-straight for Battle who joined the 1,000-point Club finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds. It was also a conference-leading 15th double-double this season for the senior. Skinner contributed 16 points and four rebounds in the win.
The Tigers were led by Aleah Nelson scored all of 24 of her points in the second half. Allie Kubek added 20 points.
