Blue Hens Defeat Monmouth, 10-1, To Take Weekend Series

NEWARK, Del. – Joey Loynd had three hits including a home run while starting pitcher Wyatt Nelson tossed five scoreless innings as Delaware defeated Monmouth, 10-1, Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium in the rubber match of the teams' weekend series.

Loynd finished 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI while Dominic Ragazzo, Jake Dunion and Jordan Hutchins each added two hits on the day.

Nelson allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out a pair to earn his first win of the season on the mound. Jose Ledesma, Luke Pizzico, Gavin Ginchliffe and Bryce Greenly all tossed an inning of relief to close out the victory for the Blue Hens.

Ragazzo led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored on a two-out single to right by Joseph Carpenter as the Blue Hens took the early lead.

Aidan Kane singled home Dunion before scoring on an RBI double to leftcenter by Loynd in a three-run fourth inning, while Dunion hit a sacrifice fly to chase home JJ Freeman in the fifth to make it a 5-0 game.

Loynd led off the sixth with his team-leading fifth home run of the season, before Ragazzo tripled home Hutchins and then crossed the plate on a Greenly sacrifice fly.

Monmouth got on the board in the top of the seventh when Phil Stahl doubled and scored on a groundout by Jake Catalano, but Nick Vera slammed a double off the centerfield wall to drive home a pair in the bottom half to close the scoring.

"We got a great start out of Wyatt Nelson followed by the four other guys on the mound. We scripted it that way and it worked out perfectly. We're going pretty good offensively right now. Everybody's swinging the bat pretty well, so that's a good sign. We'll get ready for Georgetown on Tuesday before opening conference play next weekend."
