NEWARK, Del. – JJ Freeman belted a two-run walkoff homer over the rightfield fence in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Delaware baseball team pulled out a dramatic 9-8 win over Georgetown Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens trailed by a run in the seesaw battle heading into their final at bat, but Bryce Greenly led off by reaching on a bunt single. Freeman then laced a pitch over the fence in right, his first homer as a Blue Hen, to set off the UD celebration.
Delaware, which pounded out 13 hits on the day, won for the sixth time in its last seven games. Freeman led the way with three hits and three RBI while Dominic Ragazzo, Joseph Carpenter and Gabe Dermott each added two hits.
The Blue Hens used seven pitchers, while Mike Biasiello earned his second win of the year despite allowing three runs on just one hit in the final two frames. The Hoyas were paced by Jake Hyde, who hit a grand slam and three-run homer to finish the afternoon with seven RBI.
The Blue Hens opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Greenly scored when Hoyas catcher Adam Dapkewicz made a throwing error on a double steal, before Freeman crossed the plate on a groundout by Carpenter.
Ragazzo led off the third with a double and one out later scored on a single to center by Freeman as the Blue Hens increased their lead to 3-0.
Georgetown responded in the fourth, as Michael Eze worked a bases loaded walk before Hyde followed with a grand slam to left to give the Hoyas a 5-3 advantage.
Delaware answered back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four times to go back in front. Joey Loynd doubled home Jake Dunion with the first run of the frame, while Dermott followed with an RBI single to pull the Blue Hens even.
Ragazzo then laced a single into left to drive home Loynd, while Dermott then scored when Greenly reached on an error by Hoyas third baseman Peter Marren.
Hyde crushed a three-run shot in the top of the eighth to put the Hoyas back up 8-7, before Freeman won it for the Blue Hens with his walkoff blast in the ninth.

"This was one of those midweek games that you would have hated to lose, and you're happy to death that you won. We had the big two-run homer from Freeman, and got some good pitching from the guys today. We just gave up two longballs to their leadoff guy, but other than that I thought we did some good things on the mound. It was a down to the wire game where it looked like we should have been in total control, but I give Georgetown credit for battling back a couple times. But Freeman's homer at the end was obviously big for us heading into conference play."
