NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware volleyball head coach Kim Lambert announced the addition of associate head coach Shawn McLaughlin to her staff ahead of the 2022 season.
"I could not be more excited to welcome Shawn to our Blue Hen Family," said Lambert. "He has a deep commitment to developing players, especially in the context of offensive systems. His infectious personality is a small part of what makes him a phenomenal recruiter and allows him to connect so well with players. He is an amazing addition, as his values and goals are perfectly aligned with all we are trying to accomplish here at the University of Delaware."
McLaughlin comes to Newark after spending one season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of South Alabama. He coached alongside first-year Jaguar head coach Jesse Ortiz, where he helped Ortiz lead the 2021 squad to the program's first-ever Sun Belt Conference (SBC) regular-season title, first SBC Tournament championship and first NCAA postseason appearance. The program posted a 25-7 overall record, including a 15-1 mark in conference play. McLaughlin also assisted in the coaching of four all-SBC selections and two all-tournament honorees, including SBC Championship Most Valuable Player in Kailey Keeble.
"I am honored and thrilled for this opportunity to represent the University of Delaware and assist in the continued growth of the volleyball program," said McLaughlin. "I have known coach Lambert for a long time. She is a leader through integrity and respect and I am honored to be part of her staff."
Prior to South Alabama, McLaughlin spent three seasons (2018-20) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham serving as an assistant coach, recruiting and offensive coordinator. During his tenure, McLaughlin coached two conference USA all-freshman selections and an all-conference honoree. McLaughlin also served as an assistant coach at the University of Incarnate Word for six seasons (2013-18), where he developed four all-conference performers and a Southland Freshman of the Year. Incarnate Word made the Southland Conference tournament every season McLaughlin was part of the coaching staff.
Before heading to San Antonio, McLaughlin coached at Denver, Nevada and UC Davis. At each stop, he was involved in the development of practice plans, the breakdown of film and scouting opponents, while also assisting in recruiting.
McLaughlin kick started his coaching career in the club circuit in 2009. He served in the capacity of head coach of Force Volleyball Club (2009-11), club technical coordinator of Silver State Volleyball Club (2011-12), head coach of Colorado Volleyball Association (2012-13) and head coach of San Antonio Magic Volleyball Club (2014-18). At the helm of San Antonio Magic volleyball club, McLaughlin's team qualified for the USAV Junior Nationals in three separate seasons, including winning a Gold Medal in 2014 at the USAV Junior National in 14's USA. He has also worked with USA Volleyball at its national training camp.
McLaughlin graduated in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in History Education from Lindenwood University.
