VILLANOVA, Pa. – Delaware men's lacrosse (6-3) dropped its final non-conference game of the season, 18-13 to Villanova (5-3) today at Villanova Stadium. JP Ward led all Blue Hens with four goals and two assists for six points.
A goal from 50 yards out had the Blue Hen side of the stadium up off their feet in awe, as Owen Grant's slinger slid right in the net to give Delaware a 1-0 edge to start the game three minutes in.
Villanova responded with three goals, including two from Matt Campbell in the first period to take its first lead of the game at the 5:22 mark. The Wildcats held on to a 4-1 advantage.
Ward worked hard for his first goal of the game, but it was worth it as the attacker spun around the back of the net to find an opening to give Delaware. Ward found Tye Kurtz one minute and 15 seconds later to trim Villanova's lead and make it 4-3 in favor of the Wildcats at the end of the first period.
The second quarter saw four goals in the first five minutes of play leading to nine goals combined between the two teams. Mike Robinson had back-to-back goals for the Blue Hens to aid in the scoring while Villanova found ways to score tying for the most goals by an opponent in the first half this season with 10.
Coming out of the break, Ward scored 39 seconds in to continue his steady offensive presence. Robinson chipped in his third goal of the game three and a half minutes later and Mark Bieda added his first at the 8:47 mark to bring the Blue Hens to within one goal of Villanova.
From there, the home team scored five straight goals to create a sizable lead. Ward scored with 30 seconds left to stop Villanova's run and make it a 15-10 lead for Villanova heading into the final quarter.
Villanova netted a pair of goals to start the fourth quarter, followed by three straight Blue Hen goals including one by Harrison Ewing, his first of the season. The Wildcats scored the final goal of the game with 4:06 remaining.
Robinson tallied three goals, two assists, one ground ball, and one caused turnover on the day. Kurtz finished the game with two goals, one assist, and five ground balls. Paul Reidy had nine saves and two ground balls. Grant had four ground balls and one caused turnover.
Campbell led Villanova with seven goals and one assist.
Delaware will continue its road stint when it opens Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at UMass. The Blue Hens are the defending CAA regular season champs after finishing the 2021 season 7-1 in league play.
