AMHERST, Mass. – Delaware men's lacrosse (6-4, 0-1 CAA) fell to UMass (6-3, 1-0 CAA) 11-10 in a heartbreaker in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener to extra minutes at Garber Field.
Seven different Blue Hens scored in the contest led by Cam Acchione, Tye Kurtz, and Mike Robinson, who all had two goals apiece.
Robinson wasted little time to get the Blue Hens on the board. From about 15 yards out, Robinson found an opening from the right side of the field and slid it right past the UMass keeper.
The Blue Hens jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a Cam Acchione goal, before the Watchmen registered their first goal at the 8:30 mark.
Robinson and JP Ward scored goals three and four to make it a 4-1 lead for the visitors that extended to a 5-3 edge at the end of the first quarter. The Blue Hens outscored UMass four to one in the second quarter to take a 9-4 advantage into the break mostly due in part to the Blue Hens being able to move the ball and create a multiple threat offense that the Minutemen had trouble containing.
After halftime, UMass scored four goals in the third quarter and two in the fourth to go on a six-goal scoring streak to go up 10-9 on Delaware. The Blue Hens tied the game at 10-10 with 8:47 remaining in the game to force its first overtime of the season.
The Watchmen scored with 1:01 left in overtime to steal the win to open CAA play.
Robinson and Reed Kurtz led the way with four ground balls. Paul Reidy registered a career-high 16 saves (.593) in the contest.
Delaware returns to Newark to host back-to-back CAA contests. The Blue Hens will welcome Hofstra in a doubleheader game with the women following at 3 p.m. versus William & Mary. The men host the Pride at noon at Delaware Stadium.
