Women's Lacrosse Slips Past Old Dominion, 12-11

NORFOLK, Va. - In a Saturday thriller with six ties throughout the game, the Delaware women's lacrosse team (3-7) edged Old Dominion (5-7), 12-11, in the L. R. Hill Sports Complex. Lizzie Yurchak tallied a season-best five points (3g, 2a) in the win.
On a sunny and breezy day in Norfolk, it was Delaware that got the W on the field, after an all-around team effort saw the Blue Hens capture a stunning road victory. The Blue Hens got off to a hot start, netting three straight goals in the first period to spark the offensive output. The Monarchs answered back with two goals before Delaney McDaniel made it a 4-2 game with an assist from Riley Gillin. ODU scored twice at the end of the first period knotting the game, 4-4.
In the second period, the Monarchs took a two-goal lead in the first five minutes. Lizzie Yurchak ended Delaware's scoring drought with five minutes remaining in the half, cutting Old Dominion's lead 6-5. Kendra Schweizer tied the game, 6-6, on a woman-up possession going into halftime.
The Monarchs got the first goal in the third period, before the Blue Hens netted two straight goals to take an 8-7 lead. ODU took the lead once again with a three goal scoring streak setting a 10-8 score. Yurchak rallied back scoring once and then assisting Danika Swech to tie the game for the fifth time, 10-10.
Seven minutes into the fourth quarter, McDaniel assisted Yurchak for her third goal of the day to take the lead. The Monarchs knotted the game for the final time, 11-11, three minutes later. With under seven minutes remaining in the game, both teams went scoreless until Swech netted the game-winning goal with 37 seconds left on the clock. Swech roll dodged around her defender down the middle of the eight, firing a shot at the top left corner of the cage, securing the 12-11 win for Delaware.
The Blue Hen's offense was led by Yurchack, Gillin (1g, 3a) and McDaniel (2g,2a). Schweizer and Swech also each had two goals in the victory. Goalkeeper Mercy McCarthy earned her first win of the season, making nine stops with a .450 save percentage.
Delaware is back on the road Wednesday, March 30 for its conference opener at Drexel in Philadelphia at 4 p.m.
