Women's Lacrosse Falls to Drexel in CAA Opener

PHILADELPHIA - The Delaware women's lacrosse team fell at Drexel, 20-6, in the team's conference opener Wednesday afternoon. Danika Swech led the Blue Hens with three goals while goalkeeper Mercy McCarthy made 11 stops in the cage.
The Dragons (6-5, 1-0 CAA) got off to a hot start, with Lucy Schneidereith scoring twice in the first three minutes of the game. Danika Swech then got the Blue Hens on the board, driving across the eight and scoring non-stick high. Drexel scored five straight goals before Delaney McDaniel beat her defender to score, making it a 7-2 game. The Dragons scored once more to end the first period.
The Blue Hens (3-8, 0-1 CAA) made an effort to turn the game around in the second quarter, scoring the first two goals. McDaniel fed Swech on back-to-back goals, cutting Drexel's lead to 8-4. The Dragons scored twice more to end the first half with a 10-4 lead.
After halftime, the Dragons used their moment from the end of the first half to score three straight goals. Lizzie Hsu snapped their five-goal streak with a quick stick finish into the back of the cage with a feed from Riley Gillin. Drexel's Karson Harris then tallied her sixth goal of the game closing out the third quarter, 14-5.
The Dragons added six more goals in the fourth quarter. Keira Grant netted her third goal of the season late in the fourth quarter on McDaniel's third assist of the day, finalizing the 20-6 score.
Drexel had the advantage in shots (38-18), shots on goal (31-13) and ground balls (19-8). Delaware had a 16-13 edge in draw controls.
The Blue Hens have a week off before hosting Hofstra in a mid-week game on April 6 at 4 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.
