CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team fell just short in a tightly-contested 4-3 decision at the College of Charleston on Tuesday afternoon in a CAA matchup. With the setback, the Blue Hens slip to 13-4 on the season.
"This one will sting for a little bit as we had our chances," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "I couldn't be more proud of my players for their efforts and resiliency and I'm so encouraged because we are doing some great things. We will learn from this and keep on improving."
In doubles, the two squads split the first two matches as the duo of Eliza Askarova and Samantha Svendsen claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 2 to even things up after Charleston took the match at the No. 1 position. At No. 3, Isabella Montana and Julieta Honrubia battled hard, but the Cougars won the decisive 7-5 victory to take the doubles point.
The singles matches were highly contested as both teams fought for control. Sujova pulled UD even as she opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5. Montana followed that with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 to give the Blue & Gold a 2-1 lead.
Charleston won matches at No. 1 and No. 4 to retake the lead at 3-2, but Alina Vasilenko earned a hard-fought win at No. 2, claiming a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 victory to even things back up.
At No. 3, Honrubia dropped the first set 6-4 but came back for a 7-5 win in the second set to even the match. Her opponent, however, took the third and deciding set to win the match and give Charleston the 4-3 victory.
The Blue Hens will wrap up their Spring Break trip to South Carolina with a Wednesday matchup at Charleston Southern with first serve slated for 1 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday afternoon but was moved up to Wednesday due to an inclement weather forecast.
