NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Monmouth on Wednesday afternoon in a midweek nonconference matchup at Delaware Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Blue Hens slip to 17-11 on the season.
Brittney Mendoza and Brooke Glanden were each on base three times with two hits and a walk while scoring a run. Morgan Olynyk had a single and a double and drove in a run, while Julz Garber was on base twice with a single and a walk.
Megan Stauffer started in the circle and went 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two. Kailey Christian gave up one run in 2.2 innings and Graceyn Frost allowed one run in 1.0 innings with one strikeout.
The Blue Hens opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Hanna Garber crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give UD a 1-0 lead.
Monmouth knotted things up with a run in the top of the second, but Delaware answered with a three-run third inning to go up 4-1. After Glanden led off with a walk, Halle Kisamore flew one to the wall in left field. It just missed going over as Glanden came all the way around to score, but Kisamore was thrown out at third. Mendoza followed with a double of her own and scored on an infield single by Emily Blum. Olynyk capped the inning as she lined one past the centerfielder for a double to drive in Blum and put the Blue Hens up by three.
The Hawks came back with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth, scoring on two bases-loaded walks and a single to tie the game at 4-4.
Delaware had chances to retake the lead, putting two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings, but failed to score the go-ahead run. Monmouth used a pair of two-out RBI hits in the seventh to provide the final 6-4 score.
The Blue Hens will remain at home as they jump back into CAA play this weekend, hosting Elon for a three-game series at Delaware Softball Stadium. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch in game one scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday's series finale will start at 1 p.m.
