NEWARK, Del. – Delaware used an eighth-inning rally in the opener and a 21-hit attack in the nightcap to sweep Iona, 3-2 and 20-10, Friday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Iona struck first in the opener when Jake Field hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first, while an RBI double by Anthony Febo in the second gave the Gaels an early 2-0 lead.
Iona starter Blake Helmstetter held the Blue Hens scoreless through the first seven frames before Delaware broke through in the eighth.
Jordan Hutchins led off with an infield single, and one out later Bryce Greenly shot a single into left. JJ Freeman then doubled to left, driving home both runners to tie the game. Following a pitching change, Joseph Carpenter singled to right to plate Freeman with the go-ahead run.
UD reliever Mike Biasiello walked the leadoff batter in the ninth but then retired the next three batters to seal the win.
Chris Ludman allowed just two runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out nine batters and walking just one in seven strong innings on the mound. Biasiello, who posted five strikeouts in two hitless frames, picked up his first win of the campaign.
The Blue Hens then scored in all eight innings during the second game, as Carpenter finished 4 for 5 at the plate while Greenly and Jake Dunion added three hits apiece.
The Gaels scored three times in the top of the first, but UD quickly got two back on a Greenly RBI triple and a run-scoring single by Aidan Kane. Freeman doubled home a pair in a three-run second that put the Blue Hens in front for good, while Gabe Dermott singled home a run before Greenly's second RBI triple made it a 9-3 game in the third.
Dunion recorded an RBI single and later scored on a Dermott double to put Delaware up nine in the fourth, before Iona battled back to make it a 14-9 game heading to the bottom of the seventh. But Dunion doubled home a run before Carpenter scored on a wild pitch, and after the Gaels got a run back in the eighth, UD scored four more times in the bottom half including a leadoff homer by Dominic Ragazzo.
Dom Velazquez, who fired 2.2 hitless innings, picked up the win, while Joey Silan earned the save after allowing one run and striking out five in the final 2.1 frames.

"You're always excited about getting a doubleheader sweep, since the odds say you split doubleheaders. In the first game we came up with a big inning in the bottom of the eighth. Iona's pitcher threw really well, but our guys came through when we needed it in the eighth. The second game was one of those crazy, high-scoring games, and it's a lot better to be on the winning end. So it was a good day overall."
