NEWARK, Del. –University of Delaware softball senior second baseman Brittney Mendoza has been named the CAA Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The award recognizes Mendoza's performance during Delaware's 4-1 weekend at the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament.
Mendoza batted .563 (9-16) to lead the Delaware lineup, reaching base safely in all five games while recording five RBIs and three runs. In the opening game of the weekend, Mendoza went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, RBI and run scored as Delaware topped SIUE 7-3. It was the first of two multi-hit games in the tournament as the senior second baseman went 3-for-4 in the nightcap against FAU on Saturday. Mendoza hit a home run and recorded a double, tallying three RBIs and two runs scored in the victory.
This is Mendoza's second career weekly recognition as she earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors during the 2019. The Blue Hens have now earned four conference weekly awards on the season as Graceyn Frost was named CAA Rookie of the Week after the first weekend, and last week Hanna Garber and Emily Winburn each earned Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively.
The Blue & Gold will play their home opener next weekend when the squad hosts Penn State and Canisius for the Blue Hen Invitational. Delaware will play the Nittany Lions once each on Friday and Saturday, and will take on the Golden Griffins on Saturday and Sunday.
