MERION STATION, Pa. – The University of Delaware softball team dropped a tough 4-3 decision in 10 innings at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday afternoon in a nonconference matchup. With the loss, the Blue Hens slip to 26-13 on the season.
Hanna Garber had two doubles and two RBI, while Sarah Bessel had a pair of singles and scored twice to lead the UD offense.
Graceyn Frost started in the circle and went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six. Emily Winburn took the loss with 3.0 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run with one strikeout. Kendall Shank fired 1.0 scoreless inning.
The Blue Hens put runners on base in each of the first two innings before breaking through in the top of the third. Bessel led off with a bunt single and moved up to a second on a sacrifice bunt. Garber drove her in with her second double of the game to plate the first run of the game. Two batters later, Garber scored on a double-steal attempt to make it 2-0.
Bessel again started a rally in the top of the fifth inning with a single. She went to third on a Chloe Blantz single that got past the outfielder and came around to score on a ground out by Garber to extend the lead to 3-0.
Frost kept Saint Joseph's offense quiet until the bottom of the sixth when the Hawks scored three runs to tie the game.
Neither team could move ahead as pitching dominated into extra innings. In the 10th inning, both sides started with a runner on second base. Delaware moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt, but a strikeout and ground out stranded the go-ahead run at third.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Hawks moved their runner to third with a sacrifice bunt before UD loaded the bases with two intentional walks. However, a fly ball to right field was deep enough to score the winning run.
The Blue & Gold will return to CAA play this weekend when the squad hosts Hofstra for a three-game series at Delaware Softball Stadium. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. while Sunday's series finale will begin at 1 p.m.
