NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team earned its fourth-straight CAA series victory with an 8-6 win over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Softball Stadium. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 28-14 overall and 11-4 in conference play while becoming the first team to clinch a spot in the 2022 CAA Championship.
Halle Kisamore had three hits and two runs scored to lead the offense while Emily Blum added two hits. Five different players were one base twice with a hit and a walk.
Graceyn Frost picked up her 13th win in the circle as she started and went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out five. Megan Stauffer earned her league-leading fifth save of the season with 1.2 innings of relief.
The Blue Hens put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning as three-consecutive hits resulted in a pair of runs. Morgan Olynyk and Julz Garber started things with singles into left field to put runners on first and second. Chloe Blatz then lifted a shallow fly ball into center field that dropped between the shortstop and center fielder as both runners raced around the bases to give UD a 2-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the fifth inning as Frost continued to mow down the Hofstra batters, allowing just three base runners through the first five innings.
Delaware got some much-needed insurance in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three times to extend its lead to 5-0. Hanna Garber led off with a double and Brittney Mendoza drew a walk before Brooke Glanden roped an RBI double into the left-center field gap to score Garber. An infield single by Kisamore loaded the bases before, with two outs, consecutive walks to Olynyk and Julz Garber forced runs across the plate to give the Blue Hens a five-run lead.
Hofstra broke through in the top of the sixth as four hits led to three runs to cut Delaware's lead back to two at 5-3, but the Blue Hens answered right back with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hanna Garber led off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Glanden also drew ball four and Garber broke for third with the ball in the dirt. The throw was errant as Garber came around to score and Glanden took second. Kisamore followed with a double to switch places with Glanden before Blum lined a shot down the left field line that just eluded the diving outfielder for an RBI triple to make it 8-3.
The Pride scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh, but Stauffer shut the door to give Delaware the series win.
The Blue Hens will hit the road next weekend as they travel to James Madison for a three-game CAA series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. before concluding the series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
