ELON, N.C. – The top-seeded University of Delaware softball team could not complete a late-inning comeback, falling 6-3 to No. 4 Elon in an elimination game at the 2022 CAA Championship at Elon's Hunt Softball Park. With the loss, the Blue Hens end the season with a 29-16 overall record.
Emily Winburn started in the circle and went 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout. Megan Stauffer allowed two runs, one earned, in 2.2 innings of relief while Graceyn Frost allowed a run and struck out two in 2.1 innings.
Julz Garber was on base twice to lead the offense while Brooke Glanden, Halle Kisamore and Hanna Garber all doubled.
Elon opened the scoring with a three-run second inning, plating all three runs with two outs to take a 3-0 lead. The Phoenix added an unearned run in the third inning and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 6-0 game.
Delaware's bats were silent with only one hit through the first five innings. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Glanden sparked a two-out rally with a double into the right-center field gap. She was replaced by Grace Rudolph who, after Brittney Mendoza walked, both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Rudolph crossed the plate for UD's first run on another wild pitch before Kisamore drove in Mendoza with a double to the wall in center field. After Kailey Christian walked, Emily Blum beat out an infield single that allowed Kisamore to score all the way from second to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Hanna Garber doubled in the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue Hens were unable to get any close as Elon clinched the 6-3 final.
Delaware finished the 2022 season with a 29-16 overall record and went 11-4 in conference play, winning the program's first-ever CAA Regular Season Championship. Hanna Garber was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, the first Blue Hen to win the award, and Head Coach Jen Steele was selected as the CAA Coach of the Year while a league-high five Blue Hens earned All-CAA honors.
