INDIANAPOLIS – Let the good times continue to roll in 2022! The season isn't quite over yet as the University of Delaware track and field team continues their memorable season with two student-athletes earning berths to next week's NCAA East Preliminary Round in Bloomington, Ind. Junior Megan Albamonti (javelin) and graduate student Susanna Weir (10,000m) both became official entries into the postseason event on Thursday afternoon.
"We're really proud of Megan and Susanna for advancing to the first round of the NCAA Track and Field Championships," said head coach Ryan Waite. "This is the big goal for our program, to qualify athletes to this meet, advance them through to the next round, and create national relevancy for the program and the University. Megan and Susanna are extremely hard working individuals and are prepared for this moment. We know they will represent the Blue Hens well in Bloomington."
Albamonti becomes the eighth Blue Hen in program history to reach the NCAA preliminary Round in back-to-back seasons. She enters next week ranked fourth in the region, sixth in the nation, with a school record mark of 55.78m in the javelin. The Westerly, R.I. native has three wins this spring including capturing the CAA championship for the second-straight year.
Weir becomes the first Blue Hen ever to qualify in the 10,000m, after clocking a school-record time of 34:24.34, which was good enough for 45th place in the East Region. Weir will be making her first-ever appearance in the East Preliminary Round in her career.
Indiana University will serve as host of the NCAA East Preliminary Round which officially starts next Wednesday, May 25. Albamonti will open the competition for the Blue Hens in the javelin on Thursday, May 26 at 2 p.m. while Weir will close out the day in the 10,000m Thursday evening at 9:10 p.m. The University of Arkansas will serve as host of the West Preliminary. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are held from June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
