INDIANAPOLIS – University of Delaware senior Roberto Nieves has been selected to compete in the New Haven Regional of the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships as the field was announced Wednesday.
The regional, one of six sites in the championship, will feature three rounds on May 16-18 at the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Conn. The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals, which will be held May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Nieves is one of five individuals heading to New Haven along with Eddy Lai of UCLA, Caleb Manuel of UConn, Adrian Vagberg of VCU and Ryan Tall of Lafayette. Fourteen teams will be competing in the regional: North Carolina, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Illinois, NC State, Charlotte, North Florida, Georgia Southern, Mississippi State, Virginia, Central Florida, Seton Hall, Yale and Sacred Heart.
Nieves will become the fourth UD men's golfer to compete in an NCAA Regional along with Darrell Clayton in 1989, Justin Martinson in 2010 and Greg Matthias in 2012. Eight Blue Hens have competed in the NCAA Championships, the last Oscar Mestre in 1981.
Nieves has enjoyed an outstanding senior season in which he broke his own program record by averaging 70.20 shots per round. He has posted seven top-five finishes in 11 tournaments, and was the Wildcat Fall Invitational individual champion. A four-time CAA Men's Golfer of the Week recipient, he was the Blue Hens' low finisher eight times. Sixteen of Nieves's 30 rounds this season have been in the 60's, doubling the previous UD record of eight set by himself in 2019-20 and Martinson in 2009-10.
