Strien Earns CAA Leadership & Sport Excellence Award

RICHMOND, Va. - University of Delaware field hockey captain and five-year letterwinner Femke Strien has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Leadership and Sport Excellence Award recipient for the 2021-22 academic year.

The awards, which are voted on by the CAA's Faculty Athletic Representatives, are given to the student-athlete of each sport who represents the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements.

Strien graduated from UD in the spring of 2021 with a degree in psychology, earning a 3.51 GPA. Strien was a member of the 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021 CAA Tournament Championship teams and a member of the 2017 and 2019 CAA Regular Season Championship teams. She helped the squad advance to the first round of the NCAA Tournament in four out of her five seasons with the Blue Hens.
A native of IJsselstein, The Netherlands, Strien earned her third career All-CAA First Team honor this season. Starting all 22 games, Strien ranked second on the team with 23 points (6g, 11a) and tied for 19th nationally in assists per game (0.55). She ranks seventh all-time in Delaware history with 107 career points, 13th with 37 goals, tied for seventh with 10 game-winning goals and fourth with 33 assists.
Strien was tabbed a 2021 NFHCA Division I Third Team All-American, earned 2020 NFHCA Division I All-American Second Team accolades, and picked up NFHCA Division I All-American First Team honors in 2019. She is also a three-time member of the NFHCA Division I Mid-Atlantic Region First Team and was named to the NFHCA 2021 Division I Senior Team.
The midfielder was named CAA Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 and was twice named to the CAA All-Tournament team (2019 and 2020). She earned CAA Player of the Week honors six times in her career and earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors twice her freshman season.Â
In the classroom, Strien was a five-time member of the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, a nine-time member of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and was named to Delaware's Dean's List five times. She earned Synapse Sports Weekly Honor Roll twice in 2019.Â
Off the field, she volunteered with the Special Olympics, Reps for Kids, UDance and the National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinic. Strien coached for Hockey Fun Summer Camps and with the Empower Field Hockey Academy. She used the majority of her free time to watch as much film as possible, even hosting teammates over to her own apartment to review film.
