NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware baseball head coach Greg Mamula has announced the addition of Chris Collazo to his staff as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator.
Collazo arrives in Newark after spending the previous seven years at Monmouth, the last six as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator.
"With Chris joining the Blue Hen baseball program as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator, we now have one of the region's most established recruiters and assistant coaches. His ability to recruit and develop talented players will be instrumental to the success of our program. Chris' upbeat personality and ability to connect with others will be of great benefit to our student-athletes. We are excited and fortunate to have Chris joining us," Mamula said.
Collazo helped lead the Hawks to 24 wins in each of the last two seasons, with three players earning All-MAAC honors in both years. Dixon Black was named a Freshman All-American and MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2021, and became the fourth freshman in program history to be named to the all-conference first team.
Under Collazo's tutelage, two Hawks were named All-MAAC in 2017, 2018 and 2019. During his first season in 2016, Collazo led the MAAC's second best offensive attack, posting a team batting average two points shy of leading the league. Three players were selected to the All-MAAC First Team, while Dan Shea and Grant Lamberton were tabbed to the ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region Second Team. The Hawks won 30 games that season and earned the third seed in the MAAC Tournament.
Collazo spent the 2015 season at Villanova, where he worked with the hitters and defense. He coached two All-Big East performers, while the Wildcat offense posted a 28-point jump in batting average from the previous year.
Prior to his season on the Main Line, Collazo spent three years at Wagner coaching the hitters and infielders. In his final season, the Seahawks reached the NEC Tournament for the first time since 2010 while infielder Chris Smith earned all-conference accolades. Collazo also coached Ian Miller, an All-NEC performer who was a 14th round draft pick by the Seattle Mariners.
After graduating from Monmouth in 2010, Collazo spent the 2011 season at Felician College when he helped the team to 24 wins and mentored three all-conference players on offense. He spent the fall of 2011 at Seton Hall before moving to Wagner.
Collazo finished his career at Monmouth tied for the program record in hits, while his 247 career hits are still second most in Hawks history. He was a two-time First Team All-NEC selection in 2008 and 2009, while he earned 2009 NEC Tournament MVP honors after hitting .642 in three tournament games to lead the Hawks to the conference title and an NCAA regional appearance. He also was a member of the 2007 Monmouth squad that captured the NEC title.
Collazo's 88 hits in 2009 are one shy of the program's single season record, while his 136 career runs scored are 11th all-time and his 72 runs rank 13th in Monmouth history. He hit .376 for his career, good for 17th all-time. Collazo was a 2009 First Team All-NJCBA selection after earning NJCBA Al-Rookie honors as a freshman in 2006.
