Volleyball Drops Season Opener at Temple

PHILADELPHIA –The University of Delaware volleyball team opened the 2022 campaign Friday evening with a thrilling five-set match with Temple (1-1) inside McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia. Although the Blue Hens (0-1) held a 2-1 set lead heading into the fourth set, the Owls rallied in the final two sets to earn their first win of the season (20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 24-26, 10-15).
Delaware outhit Temple by a slight margin, .266-.264. The Blue Hens held the advantage in kills (64-61), assists (61-57) and digs (75-61) while the Owls led the way in points (75-70), aces (8-2) and blocks (6-4).
After falling 25-20 in set one, Delaware turned things around in the second set hitting at a match-best clip of .433. Both teams were tied at nine when Lani Mason finished off Ezgi Basaranlar's feed as part of Delaware scoring four-straight points, 13-9. Temple refused to go away quietly and was able to get in as close as two, 23-21, before Savannah Seems buried back-to-back kills for the Blue Hens to capture the 25-22 set two win.
Set three proved to be a seesaw battle with Delaware holding on to the edge 16-15. Basaranlar connected with Lauryn Richardson to kickstart a 9-2 run to claim the 25-17 victory.
The Blue Hens remained in the driver's seat in the fourth set after putting together a dominating 9-1 spurt capped by Ricardson's kill, 17-9. The Owls answered back with a 12-3 run of their own to regain the lead, 21-20. The battle for the lead commenced as Mason nailed down two crucial kills to knot the set up twice, 24-24. Temple walked away with the 26-24 set four win after Peyton Boyd and Samantha Jo Mikosky teamed up for a block assist.
Delaware opened the fifth and deciding set by using a 5-2 run. With the scoreboard showing 7-6 in favor of Temple, Basaranlar dished out back-to-back assists to Seemans and Richardson to give the Blue Hens its final lead of the night, 9-7. The Owls closed out the match using an 8-1 run to capture the 15-10 set five win.
Mason finished with a career-best 26 kills to go along with 15 digs for her first double-double of the season. Seemans followed with 13 kills and match-high 19 digs to post her first double-double of the season. Basaranlar dished out a match-best 49 assists to go with eight digs and five kills. Eileen Gex scooped up 15 digs.
Jelena Prolic paced Temple with 19 kills and nine digs. Taylor Davenport chipped in with 17 kills, Boyd added 12 digs and 10 kills and Patrycja Zielinska finished with 49 assists.

Delaware is set to face Seton Hall (1-0) Saturday, Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. inside McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia as part of the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge hosted by Temple University.
