Volleyball Sweeps Davidson, 3-0

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The University of Delaware volleyball team concluded their play at the two-day Winthrop Tournament Saturday afternoon inside Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C. The Blue Hens (4-4) remained perfect in the tournament, capturing the straight sets victory (25-22, 25-21, 25-16) over Davidson (4-4).
"I'm incredibly proud of our progress this weekend," said head coach Kimberly Lambert. "We did a great job of keeping our composure and sticking to our game plan against a high-energy and scrappy Davidson."
Delaware took over the entire match, outhitting Davidson .210 to .162. The Blue Hens led the way in points (52-44), kills (41-33), aces (8-4), assists (35-32) and digs (58-40) while the Wildcats held the edge in blocks (7-3).
Delaware saw the scoreboard favor Davidson 10-3 in the opening set. The Blue Hens scored four unanswered points, with Hannah Wright serving, to pull within one, 13-12. The Wildcats built a four-point cushion, 18-14, thanks to Sola Omonije's kill. Lily Rogers' finished off Ezgi Basaranlar's assist to kickstart a dominating 10-2 run for Delaware to take control of set one, 24-20. Davidson scored two points before Lani Mason nailed one down to secure the 25-22 set one win.
The Blue Hens remain in control in the second set, opening up with an 11-4 lead, capped by a Savannah Seemans' kill. Davidson clawed their way back into the match where they held a brief one-point advantage, 20-19. Delaware closed out set two with a 6-1 spurt, headlined by Seemans serving three-straight points, to claim the 25-21 victory.
Delaware put together their strongest attacking set in set three, swinging at a .333 clip. The Blue Hens watched its lead balloon to 10 after using a 10-2 scoring run, capped by Rogers' kill. Seemans buried one for match point before a Davidson attacking error completed the Blue Hens clean sweep.
Mason finished with 20 kills and nine digs while Rogers followed with eight kills in Delaware's win. Basaranlar dished out 35 assists and Eileen Gex, Seemans and Amelia Painter anchored the Blue Hen defense with 17, 16 and 10 digs, respectively.
Omonije paced Davidson with eight kills while Jessie Doyal and Xuan Nguyen both chipped in 15 assists apiece. Bella Brady scooped up 14 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware returns to campus and will welcome Northeastern for a weekend series Saturday, Sept. 17 and Sunday, Sept. 18 to open CAA play. Both matches are slated for a 2 p.m. start inside Bob Carpenter Center.
