NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team opened up Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play by bringing the brooms out and swept Northeastern (3-7, 0-1 CAA) in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) Saturday afternoon inside Bob Carpenter Center. With the win, the Blue Hens (5-4, 1-0 CAA) have extended their winning streak to four matches, including winning 12 straight sets, and pushed their home winning streak to eight games dating back to last season league matchup against Hofstra on Oct. 3.
Delaware put together their finest set in the third, hitting .379 before finishing .280 on the afternoon, compared to Northeastern's .202. The Blue Hens led the way in points (58-46), kills (46-36), aces (6-4), assists (42-35) and digs (49-39). The Huskies held the advantage in blocks (6-5).
Set one saw both teams playing it close to one another, 13-13. Lily Rogers' finished off Ezgi Basaranlar's feed to kickstart a much needed 5-1 Blue Hen run to build the four-point cushion, 18-14. Northeastern got in as close as two points, thanks to Erica Staunton's kill, 20-18. Basaranlar connected both Lani Mason and Rogers for back-to-back kills, which was part of Delaware's scoring five of the set's last eight points, to capture the 25-21 win.
The Blue Hens opened set two with a dominating 7-3, capped by Rogers' kill. Determined to stay in the game, the Huskies went on an 11-6 run to take the narrow one-point lead, 14-13. Delaware remained calm, cool and collected as a Pearce Augier kill ignited a dominating 10-3 run, with Basaranlar serving six-unanswered points, 23-17. Northeastern pulled within three, 23-20, before back-to-back Huskie errors worked in Delaware's favor to claim the 25-20 set two victory.
Playing for 12-straight set wins, Delaware opened with 8-3 spurt, capped by Savannah Seemans and Augier teaming up to send Marika Virthe's attack away. Northeasteren battled and only trailed by two after Staunton's kill, 19-17. The Blue Hens remained in the driver's set, using a 6-2 run, highlighted by Kirah Johnson and Basaranlar rising up to send Staunton's attempt away and settled the 25-19 set three victory.
