Donnellan Leads Men's Soccer Past George Washington, 2-0

NEWARK, Del. – Sam Donnellan powered Delaware's men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over George Washington on Tuesday at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
"Really happy for the boys and really happy for the staff," head coach Tommy McMenemy said. "We've only been together for four weeks now and with a lot of new faces, I'm so proud of how hard they've worked. Some of our performances haven't reaped the rewards we deserved and tonight, even though we weren't perfect, we worked hard, we brought our own energy and they did enough on the business ends of the field."
Donnellan got the Blue Hens (2-3-1) on the scoreboard with a goal on a penalty kick in the 22nd after a handball by George Washington (2-2-2). It was the second consecutive game Donnellan scored a goal. Both teams were aggressive offensively in the half, each totaling six shots each, while Adam Vik made four saves for Delaware. The Blue Hens also had four corner kicks in the half, as compared to the Colonials' three.
Donnellan scored his second goal of the game and fourth of his career in the 56th minute after Jordan Miller made a great pass to him, and Donnellan was able to breakaway from the defense and beat the Colonial keeper. Vik made two more saves in the second half to give him a career-high six for the game and his second career shutout. Donnellan became the first Blue Hen to score multiple goals this season, and the first freshman to do so since Justin Ruth scored two goals against Drexel on March 21, 2021. Donnellan is also one of five freshman in NCAA Division I to score at least four goals this season. Miller's assist was the first of his career.Â
"Sam was excellent," McMenemy said. "He's always dangerous if you can provide the service, the work rate behind him to create those chances from back-to-front was excellent."
Delaware wraps up their two-game home swing against Elon, their first CAA home game of the year, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
