WASHINGTON D.C. – No. 17 Delaware field hockey (1-2) dropped its road opener Friday afternoon, 2-1, to no. 21 American (2-1).
"One thing is clear after todays' game: in case we want something, we must go get it and earn it!," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "Today we had our moments and played very well on both sides of the ball as a team but did not do so on a consistent basis. The team and coaches know we can be better than the final game score and understand that we must be more consistent all throughout the game and play as one team. We want to believe the three games this season have provided us with experiences and lessons that will be beneficial in our CAA opener versus Monmouth on Sunday."
One minute and seven seconds into the second quarter, American found the scoreboard with a score from Imogen Hatton. The Eagles held a 1-0 lead into the half.
Just after the 50-minute mark, Delaware capitalized off a ball inside the circle as Sian Emslie fired a shot that caromed off a defender's stick and in for a score.
Almost eight minutes later, an unassisted snipe from Merel Dupont proved to be the difference maker.
Lizzie Gaebel faced 12 shots and made five saves on the day.
The Blue Hens look to bounce back on Sunday with their conference opener at Monmouth.
