WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – No. 17 Delaware field hockey (1-3, 0-1CAA) fell in overtime Sunday afternoon in its CAA opener at Monmouth (2-1, 1-0 CAA), 3-2. The Hawks' Aylin Aufenacker scored the game-winner 4:15 into the extra period.
"Proud of our performance and especially growth as a team today," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "We played our most complete Delaware Hockey in a long time and our puzzle is becoming more clear. I am excited to welcome this team back for a good week of prep before we host UConn and Penn State at Rullo Stadium next weekend."
Delaware struck first as rookie Noelle Sabbagh fed Morgan Rigual after a blocked shot from a penalty corner, to go ahead 1-0. Rigual picked up her first goal of the season, while Sabbagh tallied her first career point.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, the Hawks answered as Katie Yoder finished the one-on-one chance up the left side of the circle to even the game at one apiece.
Into the third quarter, Sian Emslie found an open Kiki Oudshoorn to push the Blue Hens back on top.
For the second time, Monmouth erased the one-goal deficit with a score off a penalty corner with tw0-minutes left in regulation.
In the extra frame, each team had a chance in its offensive zone, but Monmouth was able to convert with a back-handed shot from the left post.
Lizzie Gaebel picked up the decision with three saves and three goals against.
Delaware returns to action on Friday at Rullo Stadium as the nationally ranked UConn Huskies pay a visit.
