Volleyball Match Preview: American & UMBC

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team returns to action this weekend to take on American on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. inside Bender Arena in Washington D.C. and UMBC on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore, Md.

Up Next: Delaware will remain on the road next Friday, Sept. 9-Saturday, Sept. 10 to compete at Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. The Blue Hens will face Wyoming at 11 a.m. and then the hosts Winthrop at 4:30 p.m. UD will close out the tournament against Davidson on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. All matches will take place inside Winthrop Coliseum.

What You Need to Know:
- This will be the 17th time Delaware and American will be meeting, with the Blue Hens holding the 9-7 all-time record. The Blue Hens and the Eagles last met during the 2011 campaign where UD captured the 3-1 NCAA Tournament First Round win on Dec. 2.
- American are 3-0 on the young season and their last time out was against George Washington on Aug. 27, where the Eagles captured the four-set win over the Colonials.
- UD and UMBC will be facing each other for the 37th time, with the Blue Hens holding the 29-7 all-time record. In the last 10 matchups, Delaware went 7-3 and currently holds a seven-game winning streak over the Retrievers; which is highlighted by the straight-set victory last season (Nov. 4, 2021)
- UMBC will enter the weekend with a 1-2 record looking to face American Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 pm. The Retrievers last time out was on Aug. 27 against Colgate where they fell 3-1 to the Raiders.
- Delaware's last time out was on Wednesday (Aug. 31) when they opened their home schedule against George Washington. The Blue Hens captured their first win of the season by sweeping the Colonials along with head coach Kimberly Lambert earning her first victory at the helm of the program in front of the home crowd.
- The statline: Lani Mason led the way in with 12 kills to go with six digs, four assists and three assists; Savannah Seemans followed with match-high 11 digs to go along with seven kills; Ezgi Basaranlar directed the Blue Hen offense with a match-best 25 assists while Pearce Augier added three blocks.
