Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Delaware volleyball fell in four sets (22-24, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25) to American (4-0) Saturday afternoon inside Bender Arena in Washington D.C. The setback moves the Blue Hens to a 1-3 mark on the young season.
American outhit Delaware .229 to .194 while leading the charge in blocks (8-7). Delaware held the edge in points (68-64), kills (54-49), assists (48-30) and digs (43-40). Both teams drew even with seven aces apiece.
After dropping the opening set, the Blue Hens were determined to put set two in the win column. American held a narrow one-point lead, 14-13, before Savannah Seemans nailed down one to ignite an 8-1 run, headlined by Lily Rogers serving five-straight points, 21-15. The Blue Hens never wavered when the Eagles pulled within one as Ezgi Basaranlar connected with Lani Mason to put away set two, 25-22.
Delaware outscored American 13-8 in the third set to get in as close as two, 21-19, before the Eagles responded with four answered points to take the 25-19 set three win.
Set four was a seesaw battle that saw three lead changes and five ties as the Blue Hens were determined to push the match to a fifth set. With match point in favor of American, Delaware scored four-straight points thanks to Kirah Johnson's kill, back-to-back aces by Emily Chrysogelos and Mason's kill, 24-22. The Eagles secured the victory after a Blue Hen attacking error, 25-22.
Mason paced Delaware with 14 kills while Johnson followed with 13 kills and five blocks. Seemans chipped in 11 kills and nine digs while Rogers nailed down 10 kills. Eileen Gex scooped up 14 digs while Basaranlar dished out match-high 44 assists.
Zeynep Uzen finished with 17 kills and nine digs in American's win while Carlie Fikse added 12 kills. Esma Sipahi and Inbal Peleg dished out 16 and 12 assists apiece. Rachael Bennett made 12 digs.
