Volleyball Tangles With UMBC In Five-Set Thriller
9/4/2022 5:06:00 PM | Volleyball
BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Delaware volleyball team rallied to push the match to five sets after being down two sets and fell in the decision set (20-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 8-15) to UMBC (2-3) Sunday afternoon inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore, Md. The setback moves the Blue Hens to a 1-4 mark on the young season.
UMBC held the hitting percentage, swinging at a clip of .295 versus Delaware's .208. The Blue Hens held the edge in points (83-82.5), aces (10-9) and blocks (14-6) while the Retrievers led the way in kills (67-59), assists (65-56) and digs (75-59).
Trailing by two sets, the Blue Hens opened set three with an 8-3 spurt, capped by back-to-back aces by Lani Mason. UMBC clawed their way back into the set using an 8-4 run of their own to pull within one, 12-11. Delaware never wavered and built a six-point cushion after scoring five unanswered points with Eileen Gex serving four-straight, 17-11. The Retrievers responded quickly with a 9-3 run to knot the set at 20 apiece. With their backs against the wall and seeing match point on the board (24-23), Savannah Seemans connected with Ezgi Basaranlar as part of Delaware scoring three straight to capture the 26-24 set three win.
Heading into the fourth set, momentum was on the Blue Hens side as the team was swinging at their best rate of .500. Seemans kickstarted Delaware's 7-2 run with an ace. UMBC got in as close as three points after Mia Bilusic nailed one down, 18-15. The Blue Hens still in the driver's seat put together a 7-3 run, including Mason burying her 27th kill of the night to set a new career-best, to settle the 25-18 set four win.
The Retrievers answered back by opening the fifth set with an 8-0 run. Seemans put Delaware on the board after receiving a feed from Basaranlar. Back-to-back block assists by Kirah Johnson and Lily Rogers pulled the Blue Hens within four points, 11-7. With match point favoring UMBC, Johnson and Rogers rose up and sent away Bilusic's attempt to keep Delaware in the match. But a Blue Hen attacking error closed out the five-set thriller and gave UMBC their second win of the season.
Mason finished the afternoon with a career-best 31 kills to go along with 15 digs, four blocks and two aces to post her third double-double of the season. Seemans followed with eight kills and 11 digs while Johnson added eight kills and 12 blocks. Basaranlar dished out 50 assists while Gex scooped up 15 digs.
Kamani Conteh paced UMBC with 27 kills and 16 digs in the win while Bilusic chipped in 19 kills. Serin Maden had a match-high 53 assists while Aysia Miller scooped up a match-best 30 digs.
