NEWARK, Del. – Delaware men's basketball (10-7, 2-2 CAA) used a white-hot first half of shooting to topple Towson (10-7, 2-2) 72-59 on Wednesday night.
Delaware jumped out to a 7-0 run before a Towson timeout at 17:26. The Blue Hens then tallied a 20-5 run over an 8:57 span to put the home team up 27-12. UD finished the half with a 39-26 lead, which ties for the most points to start a game this season.
Delaware was blazing hot from the field, connecting at a 64-percent rate compared to Towson's 32-percent. The Hens also owned a +6 rebounding advantage at the break.
That 64-percent mark was the highest shooting percentage in a half this season, surpassing the 59.3 percent mark set against Wilmington during the second half.
Jyáre Davis and Christian Ray each contributed 10 points in the first half and Ebby Asamoah added nine.
Towson pulled within four on two separate occasions early in the second half, however the Blue Hens pulled the lead back to nine at 58-49 with seven minutes on the clock. The latter portion of the half did not yield any different results as Delaware got into the bonus and began to pad its lead, beating Towson 72-59.
All 10 wins this season came when holding opponents to less than 70 points, and the Blue Hens move to 65-18 with those parameters during the Martin Ingelsby era.
Ray led all scorers with 18, his third-straight game with double digit point totals. Asamoah chipped in 17, while Davis scored 16, the second time this season the Hens had three score 15 or more.
Overall, the Hens shot 51.1 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from beyond the arc compared to the Tigers shooting 38.5 percent overall and 33.3 percent from three.
Starting consecutive games, Gianmarco Arletti once again set a career high in blocks, accounting for all four of Delaware's during the game. He broke the mark of three he set during the team's last game at Charleston.
Delaware heads on the road for two-straight with Hofstra on Saturday and Northeastern on Monday.
