Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Towson

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team returned to the First State Friday evening to host a CAA battle against Towson (10-7, 4-2 CAA) inside Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (10-7, 3-3 CAA) suffered a heartbreaking 69-66 setback to the Tigers, which stopped their winning streak to two games while Towson extend their winning streak to four.
After Towson opened the game holding a 6-2 lead, a pair of Michelle Ojo freebies kickstarted a dominating 19-6 run that was headlined by Makayla Pippin's eight points. Delaware took the 21-12 lead heading into the second period.
Back-to-back layups by Kharis Idom and Ojo restarted the Blue Hen offense to push the lead up to seven (28-21) before Towson once again bounced back to make the score 28-26. With 3:16 remaining, Ojo, Nakiyah Mays-Prince, and Idom ignited Delaware's 7-0 spurt in 45 seconds, and then Demi Burdick finished off the half with a made-jumper to give send the Blue Hens into the break with the 37–29 lead.
To open the third quarter, the Tigers rallied and put together a 17-4 run to regain the lead, 46-41, with 5:04 remaining. The Blue Hens stopped the bleeding thanks to three-point specialist Jewel Smalls connecting from deep at the 4:38 mark, making it a one possesion game, 46-44. Towson scored six-unanswered points to build an eight-point cushion, 52-44, before Klarke Sconiers finished off a three-point play to trim Delaware's deficit to five, 52-47.
The Blue Hens were very resilient as Mays-Prince and Rebecca Demeke knocked down a trio of triples to open make it a 56-all game with 6:44 left in the final quarter. The seesaw battle commenced as Delaware saw its last lead of the night at the 5:12 mark thanks to a trio of Kharis Idom free throws, 61-60. Although the Tigers would go on to score nine of the remaining 14 fourth-quarter points, the Blue Hens saw a glimmer of hope after Patricia Anumgba only made one of her two free throws. Delaware's final attempt to send the game into overtime came up short with time expiring, settling the 69-66 final.
Mays-Prince paced Delaware with 12 points (5-9 FG, 2-3 3PT) while Idom, Pippin and Ojo poured in 10 points each.
Sky Williams led all scorers with 16 points (6-12 FG) in Towson's win. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas followed with 14 points (5-7 FG) and a game high six steals while Anumgba poured in 13 points and nabbed four steals.
Delaware shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-17) from beyond the arc, and 78.6 percent (11-14) from the free throw line. Towson connected on 45.5 percent (25-55) from the field, 15.4 percent (2-13) from three-point territory, and 63.0 percent (17-27) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Tigers in rebounds (34-29), offensive rebounds (10-7), assists (13-8), and bench points (35-11).
