Women’s Basketball Battles Elon

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team played host to Elon (5-15, 1-8 CAA) in a CAA battle Friday evening inside Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (10-8, 3-4 CAA) dropped a heartbreaking 63-60 decision as the Phoenix snapped their 13-game losing streak.
After Elon opened the game on a 7-2 run, Klarke Sconiers laid in two at the 7:13 mark for Delaware to use a 15-4 run to close out the quarter with the 17-11 lead.
Tara Cousins connected from deep to 14 seconds into the second period before Michelle Ojo grabbed the lose ball and took it all the way to the hoop for the Blue Hens to build the nine-point cushion, 22-13, with 8:23 left. Elon responded with an 12-2 run capped by Kamryn Doty's jumper making it a 25-all game. Cousins sank a pair of freebies with 1:04 remaining for Delaware's three-point lead (29-26) before Doty poured in two free throws for the Phoenix to send the 29-28 game into the break.
Elon outscored Delaware 15-10 in the third quarter heading into the final quarter with the 43-39 advantage. With 4:12 showing on the fourth-quarter clock, the rookie Nakiyah Mays-Prince entered the chat by knocking one down from beyond the arc as part of Delaware's 8-2 spurt, tying the game up 54. The seesaw battle commenced as a Ojo free throw and a clutch Makayla Pippin layup gave the Blue Hens its last lead of the night, 59-58, with 33 seconds left. Doty's lay in five seconds later helped Elon regain the lead, 60-59, before Pippin drew a crucial foul in the last five seconds of regulation. Pippin split the pair to make it a 60-all game before Raven Preston heaved a three-pointer at the buzzer to settle the 63-60 final.
Jewel Smalls paced Delaware with 12 points and three rebounds. Sconiers followed with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks while Cousins chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Preston led the way with 17 points and six rebounds in Elon's win. Doty and Evonna McGill (six assists) each poured in 13 points while Ajia James added 10 points and 10 rebounds to the mix.
Delaware shot 38.9 percent (21-54) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-21) from beyond the arc, and 70.6 percent (12-17) from the free throw line. Elon connected on 51.0 percent (26-51) from the field, 50.0 percent (5-10) from three-point territory, and 46.2 percent (6-13) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Phoenix in rebounds (33-31), offensive rebounds (12-7), steals (8-5), blocks (3-2), points off turnovers (17-12), bench points (16-10), and fastbreak points (7-5).
