PHILADELPHIA – A furious late comeback was not enough for Delaware men's basketball (11-10, 3-5 CAA) as it fell to familiar foe Drexel (12-8, 5-2) in overtime, 77-74, Saturday afternoon.
Through the first 12:19 of the opening half, neither team established a run larger than 3-0 with the Dragons leading 23-22. Cavan Reilly notched nine of Delaware's points going 3-for-4 from long range.
Drexel pushed its advantage to eight by the end of the quarter despite a 12-point outburst from Reilly, tying a career high. He led all scorers heading into the locker room.
The Dragons shot 57.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three, and while Drexel had the overall shooting advantage, the Hens used a 40-percent mark from three (4-of-10) to remain close in the contest.
Delaware cut the deficit in half with a 9-5 advantage through the opening 4:07 of the second half. Drexel responded quickly to push the lead up to nine at 49-40 after five-straight points. The Hens continued to claw back down the stretch and brought the game close in the middle minutes.
Reilly's fifth three-ball of the contest gave Delaware its first lead since the first bucket of the game.
Jameer Nelson Jr., who was held to just eight first-half points, heated up and hit two crucial floaters with less than two minutes to go.
Both teams battled with free throws late but ended up needing overtime to decide the game.
Delaware did not record a single field goal during the overtime period, and all the Dragons needed was four points and a few timely stops to eke out the win.
Jyáre Davis used 19 second-half points to lead all scorers with a career best 26, while Nelson Jr. chipped in 21, and Reilly scored a career-high 15.
The Hens shot 49.1 percent overall and 36.8 percent from three, while Drexel had marks of 55.3 percent and 30.8 percent, respectively.
Delaware returns to action with a matchup against league newcomer, Hampton, on Thursday in Virginia.
