Men’s Basketball Can’t Hold Off Pirates

HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton (5-16, 2-7 CAA) rallied a 12-point comeback Thursday evening to defeat Delaware men's basketball (11-11, 3-6 CAA), 67-66.
A four-point game at the half, Delaware led the Pirates with 25 of its 35 points coming from the combination of Jyáre Davis (14) and Jameer Nelson Jr. (11). The pair was the only scorers in double figures at the break. The Hens held as much as an eight-point lead but ended the first half up 35-31.
UD utilized a 13-3 run over a 5:25 span early in the second half to pull ahead by double figures at 50-39. Christian Ray accounted for five points on the run.
Hampton slashed back, pulling within three at 57-54 before the under eight media timeout with 6:49 left. The Pirates led for the first time at 2:24 with a Russell Dean jumper that made the score 63-62. The teams split the next eight points for for the Pirates to take the win.
Jordan Nesbitt led all scorers with 31 points. Delaware was led by 20 points from Davis on a 7-of-14 evening.
Davis was joined by Nelson Jr. (17) and Ray (11) in double figures. Ray finished with a double-double, adding a game-high 11 rebounds.
Delaware returns to the friendly confines of the Bob Carpenter Center for a nationally televised rematch against Northeastern on Saturday at noon.
