NEWARK, Del. – Delaware student-athletes came together at the Bob Carpenter Center and Whitney Athletic Center to play games, have fun, and get reps in to raise money for kids and families battling cancer. The cohort raised $22,000 at the department's annual Reps For Kids event in December.
Reps for Kids is an event organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which works closely with UDance, the B+ Foundation, and Andrews Athletes to help raise money and awareness for childhood cancer.
"Another Reps for Kids in the books and I couldn't be more proUD of my fellow student-athletes," said SAAC Programming Director and men's swimmer Jacob Bishop. "After having been so successful with our fundraising last year, Marie Poulin and I were excited to bring the event back for another year. From having our SAAC reps helping us run our stations to every athlete being so heavily involved in fundraising, it was truly a team effort to make this event so successful again. At Delaware, we take it upon ourselves to be a part of something greater than ourselves, and our commitment to supporting the B+ Foundation through this event year after year shows just that."
Joe McDonough, founder and director of the B+ Foundation, made a special appearance for the event to share his message about the foundation and the impact the student-athletes could make. The Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation, named in honor of Joe's son who died of Leukemia at the age of 14 in 2007, is the largest provider of financial assistance to families of kids with cancer nationwide. The B+ Heroes program matches children battling cancer with different organizations throughout the area, including many Delaware athletics teams.
Teams were paired up and went head-to-head in dodgeball, an inflatable obstacle course, flash fundraising, four square, minute to win it games, family feud, knockout, and of course weightlifting.
Men's and women's swimming & diving raised the most money as a team with $4,163, followed by rowing ($2,806.17) and cheer ($2,199.56) to round out the top three.
Individually, Euan Mackenzie from men's tennis topped his peers with $725 raised. Grace Rudolph from softball ($428), and Bishop ($422) ranked second and third, respectively.
In the weight room, Zanthius Sullivan from cheer put up 112 reps at 135 pounds. His teammate AJ Goldston (111), and football's Bradly Anyanwu (56 reps) finished out the top three male performers.
On the women's side at 65 pounds, Charlise Oberholzer from swimming hit 105 reps, with softball's Brittney Mendoza (97 reps), and volleyball's Leanna Deegan (74 reps) ranking next.
Football posted the best team average with 42 reps, while volleyball paced the women's squads at 35 reps.
